Our never ending project, the kennels. 10 homemade wood ten x ten duplex houses set outside the ten x ten magnum kennels . This way the dogs can be securely locked up at night or if we both are not at home. All kennels are connected to a 40 ft grass run
.
Seven acres of the back yard is fenced in for play time.
Twelve ten x ten magnum kennels with our homemade wood duplex house set outside the 10 x 10's for pairs. The kennel floors were first laid with gravel. Then a deck floor was made with wood pallets. Each kennel has a 40 foot grass / dirt run . All our dogs are kenneled in pairs . Dogs are locked up in the 10 X 10 at night or if we both are not at home.

The Dog House Duplexes
TO BUILD > We make a base for our duplex dog houses out of two 2 x 6 pressure treated lumber and 2 x 4 pressure treated cross braces. On this we put on the 1 x 6 pressure treated decking boards. The base is approximately 8 ft x 3 ft 6 inches. The back is 1/2 in exterior plywood about 33 inches high and the length of the base. The front is 36 inches high and the length of the base. Add the sides and then the top a full 4 ft x 8 ft sheet that allows for a slight overhang at the front. We then cut two curved at the top openings off center to allow to comfortable areas for two dogs, dividing the two with a partition in the inside middle to separate

All our Alaskan Malamutes are equally cared for and loved and this has made for a happy and contented pack of Malamutes. Most of our day is devoted to our dogs in one way or another - whether it be exercise , training or just having fun with them. This involves running ALL our dogs every single day. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 40 mins from Roanoke, Va.

SUMMER TIME - BEAT THE HEAT
THIS SUMMER WE ADDED AN ELECTRIC LINE UNDER THE HALF ROOF

An outlet was secured under every other kennel. Two fans were plugged into each plug attached to a different kennel. This allowed to first fan to push to the farthest kennel with each consecutive fan adding to this breeze. A timer was setup at the beginning of the line to allow us to set the time of start and stop for any given day.. The extra added bonus is now during the winter time we can have heated bowls so the water will not freeze. Shade tarps were added in the kennels at the hottest points of sunlight during the daytime hours

From the Beginning

We Started by finding the nice shaded area in the yard. We still added about 10 more trees around the houses . We left a big buffer between us and the house next door that had horses. Our land ends half way between the kennel and their house in photo right below. A 2.5 acreage buffer. Each year they hay this area that we don't use for their horses, we don't have to mow it. They leave a few bails for in the winter when we need straw for the dog houses. Alaskan Malamute
First we put up the walk way fence. This will butt up against the kennel runs. The walkway will lead to exercise yards.Hot wired the walk way , just in case as it also leads to the front yard and driveway. Planted flower bushes right outside this walkway area Alaskan Malamute
Then started putting up the eight METAL 10 X 10 s . Bolted outside to the panels are the wood duplex doghouses Alaskan Malamute

Build a small roof for shade when the trees shade isn't there.

I need a new photo but we have now moved the small roof so that they overhang the dog houses. Now they provide much more weather protection as well as closer shade to the dog houses .

Wired the top from the front of the kennel to the top of the house with reg fencing so no jumping or climbing out.

Top and back completely closed with fencing

We have now moved the roofs back so that they overhang the dog houses. Now they provide much more weather protection as well as closer shade to the dog houses .We recently decided to put wood decks in all the kennels.

As shown here roofs were moved to the back and now overhangs above the dog houses
. Laid down the pallets over the gravel in all the kennels. Then we laid pressure treated panels on top.

Sometimes together
We have a rotating dog schedule where two dogs, a different pair come in the house at night. So in one week all 14 mals have had their turn to sit on the couch with Eric or in the computer room with me one night.
